Product Description

A lifting plug is a temporary, threaded or expansible plug inserted into the fuze cavity of an artillery shell during storage, transport, and handling. Its primary functions are to protect the fuze cavity, provide a secure lifting point, and, in modern designs, enhance safety. The plug is removed at the time of firing and replaced with a fuze or other appropriate device.

Features/Roles/Variants of the product
The primary feature is a lifting ring or eyebolt that provides a sturdy and reliable point to attach hoisting equipment, like hooks or slings.
The plug has a threaded portion that allows it to be screwed securely into the shell's fuze cavity, providing a strong connection for lifting.
Some designs include a frangible or weakened neck that will bend or rupture if the shell is dropped with enough force to cause potential damage. This provides a visual cue that the munition may be unsafe.
Modern lifting plugs often incorporate safety features for cook-off scenarios (fires causing extreme heat).
These plugs may use a low-melting-point (eutectic) solder that melts at a specific temperature, allowing the plug to separate and vent hot gases before an explosion occurs.
