Fuze No. 162 Mk-8 (M-2) and Fuze No. 162 Mk-9 (M-1) are both direct action (DA) percussion fuzes, but they are designed for different caliber mortar bombs. They detonate upon direct impact with a target. Fuze 162M-8 is used for 81mm High Explosive (HE) and Practice with Powder (PWP) mortar bombs fired from a smooth bore mortar. Fuze 162 MK-9 used for 120mm HE and PWP mortar bombs.

It is a direct-action detonating mortar fuze with a simple, effective, and reliable design.
It is assembled with the 81mm HE/PWP (High Explosive/Practice With Plug) mortar bomb.
The fuze provides safety during storage, transport, and firing through mechanisms that prevent premature arming. A setback force is required after firing to move a detent and align the detonator. It also includes a safety cap for extra protection.
This is also a direct-action detonating fuze, based on a similar design as the Mk-8.
It is used with the larger 120mm HE/PWP mortar bomb, with the help of an adapter tube.
Both fuzes function upon direct impact with the target.
The mortar bombs utilizing these fuzes are designed to function effectively in extreme conditions, including sub-zero and high temperatures.
