Product Description

A Ballistic Tail Unit (BTU) is an aerodynamic tail fin assembly designed to ensure the stability and accurate trajectory of an unguided aerial bomb, especially when it is dropped from high altitudes. The primary key feature of a BTU is its ability to reduce drag and prevent the bomb from tumbling, which increases accuracy at high speeds

Features/Roles/Variants of the product
A BTU's fixed tail fins ensure that the bomb maintains a predictable and stable flight path after release. This is crucial for maintaining the bomb's accuracy and ensuring it hits nose-first for proper fuzing and penetration.
Unlike an RTU, a BTU is designed for a low-drag profile to help the bomb accelerate quickly. This "high speed, low drag" design is optimized for high-altitude bombing missions where the bomb needs to reach the ground rapidly.
A bomb with a BTU follows a classic ballistic trajectory. Its path is determined by the aircraft's speed and altitude at release, as well as gravity and air resistance
The tail unit's predictable aerodynamics are factored into the aircraft's bombing computer to calculate the optimal release point.
A BTU is used for strategic high-altitude bombing, where a swift descent is required. The opposite RTU is used in low-level attacks where the pilot needs to ensure their aircraft is safely away before the bomb detonates.
A single bomb can often be fitted with either a BTU or an RTU, depending on the mission profile. The Indian High Speed Low Drag (HSLD) bomb, for example, is equipped with either a BTU or an RTU.
