Product Description
The stabilizer assembly for a 125mm High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) round is a finned component attached to the projectile's base, designed to provide aerodynamic stability during flight. This is crucial for maintaining accuracy, especially since 125mm tank guns are smoothbore and do not use rifling to impart spin for stabilization.
Features/Roles/Variants of the product
The fins are held in a folded position while the projectile travels down the barrel. This design allows the fin-stabilized munition to be fired from a smoothbore cannon.
Once the projectile leaves the muzzle, the fins are released by mechanical or air-pressure forces. They snap open, typically rotating 90 degrees, to provide stability for the rest of the projectile's flight.
The fins use aerodynamic drag and lift to keep the projectile's nose pointed forward along its trajectory.
This is critical for the HEAT warhead, which must hit the target nose-on for the shaped charge to function effectively.
Many 125mm HEAT rounds include a tracer in the fin assembly. This allows the gunner to visually track the projectile's flight path.
Setback and air-force locking mechanisms: To prevent premature deployment, the assembly uses safety mechanisms.
During firing, the initial "setback" force (sudden acceleration) or subsequent air pressure frees the fins, but they are prevented from opening until the projectile leaves the barrel.
The tracer, if included, is integrated into the rear of the fin assembly, which also houses a safety lock system.
