The body of a hand grenade is the outer casing that contains the explosive or chemical filler and helps shape its effect. A grenade's body varies in material, shape, and design depending on its intended purpose, whether it's for fragmentation, smoke, or other effects. An empty hand grenade body is the hollow, inert casing used for training and practice purposes. It is designed to be a safe replica, simulating the shape, size, and weight of a live grenade for soldiers and enthusiasts.

For fragmentation grenades, the body is designed to rupture violently and send fragments outward, creating a lethal and injury radius.
The iconic "pineapple" grenade of WWI featured a segmented cast-iron body, but the grooves were originally for grip and did not reliably guide fragmentation. Modern versions use internal matrices for better results.
Non-fragmenting body: The bodies of offensive or special-purpose grenades are designed to contain a charge or chemical filler without producing significant fragments. They are effective for blast, signal, or crowd-control purposes
Some modern designs feature modular components. The grenade body may consist of a base, sleeve, and nose cap that can be assembled with different inserts to change the grenade's function.
